Food served on this retreat

The table

Island Greek eating: olive oil as a food group, vegetables that need no persuasion, fish straight off the Naoussa boats.

  • Breakfast

Greek yoghurt with thyme honey, seasonal fruit, fresh bread, strong coffee.

  • Tavernas and the courtyard

Tomato fritters, grilled octopus, horiatiki, gouna (the Paros sun-dried mackerel).

  • The cooking evening

You make the mezedes one night: dolmades, tzatziki, and whatever the market suggested.

Vegetarians eat like royalty in Greece; vegan and gluten-free are handled with a quick word ahead.

Know before you go

Paros is the Cyclades with the volume turned down: Naoussa's fishing harbour, marble lanes in Parikia, and a hilly interior of vineyards and chapels. It has Mykonos's looks without the velvet ropes.

Getting there

Fly Athens (ATH) then a 3-hour ferry from Piraeus, or a 40-minute hop to Paros airport (PAS). Port and airport pickups are included.

Worth your free time

  • Naoussa old port. Venetian kastro half-sunk in the harbour mouth.
  • Kolymbithres. Granite boulders sculpted into swimming coves.
  • Lefkes. Marble mountain village on the old Byzantine road.
  • Antiparos. Ten-minute ferry to an even slower island and a serious cave.

Eat this

  • Gouna. Sun-dried mackerel grilled over coals, a Paros speciality.
  • Ouzo and mezedes at the port. Order the small plates and let the evening decide.
  • Local wine. Monemvasia and Mandilaria grapes grown behind the beach.

Good to know

  • Schengen area; no visa for most visitors under 90 days.
  • The meltemi wind blows hardest late July and August; our sail day flexes around it.
  • Cards accepted almost everywhere; kiosks and buses prefer cash.
  • Ferries sell out in high summer; we book yours with the room.
