Food served on this retreat

The table

Two kitchens in one week: riad cooking in Marrakech (tagines, salads, bread from the communal oven) and surf-town fuel on the coast (sardines, avocado everything).

  • Breakfast

Msemen and beghrir flatbreads, amlou, olives, eggs, fresh orange juice, mint tea.

  • Marrakech nights

Lamb or vegetable tagine with preserved lemon, seven-vegetable couscous on its day.

  • Taghazout days

Grilled sardines by the kilo, zaalouk, avocado smoothies between surf sessions.

Vegetarian tagines are a genre of their own; vegan is easy, and everything is halal by default.

Know before you go

This route runs from Marrakech's walled medina to Taghazout, a fishing village that became Morocco's surf capital without losing its cats or its calm. Between them: argan country and the long Atlantic light.

Getting there

Fly into Marrakech (RAK). The riad is 20 minutes from the airport; the transfer west to Taghazout mid-week takes about 3 hours with a lunch stop in Essaouira if the group votes for it.

Worth your free time

  • Jardin Majorelle. Yves Saint Laurent's cobalt garden; book the first slot.
  • Anchor Point. Morocco's most famous right-hander; watch from the café even if you don't paddle.
  • Essaouira. Blue-and-white port town, Game of Thrones with better fish.
  • Agafay Desert. Stone desert 45 minutes from Marrakech that photographs like the Sahara.

Eat this

  • Tagine done properly. Slow lamb with preserved lemon; the riad's cook gives a lesson if asked.
  • Msemen at breakfast. Flaky flatbread with amlou, the almond-argan butter you'll try to smuggle home.
  • Grilled sardines in Taghazout. Off the boats, by the kilo, with bread and tomato salad.

Good to know

  • 90-day visa-free entry for most nationalities.
  • Dirhams are a closed currency; withdraw on arrival, spend before you leave.
  • Dress modestly in the medina; anything goes on the surf beaches.
  • Haggling is sport, not war; start at half and smile.
