Solo retreats in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is where solo travellers go to learn something in the water. Nosara decided not to become a party town: the maritime zone keeps buildings behind the treeline, so the beach still looks wild. It is one of the pricier destinations on our map, and honestly so, at roughly $350 to $550 a day once coaching and transfers are counted.

The route we run
Practical notes
Getting there
Fly into Liberia (LIR, 2.5 hours by road) or San José (SJO, 5 hours or a 25-minute domestic hop to Nosara's airstrip). Your pickup is included from Liberia; ask us about the domestic flight if you land in San José.
Worth your free time
- Playa Guiones. 7km of sand, no buildings visible from the water.
- Playa Pelada. Quieter, rockier, better sunsets.
- Ostional refuge. Sea-turtle arribadas on the right moon; we check dates for you.
- Nosara Biological Reserve. Mangrove trails ten minutes from the lodge.
Eat this
- Sodas. Family-run counters; casado with fresh fish for about $8.
- Fish tacos on Guiones. Every third building; follow the surfers at 1pm.
- Café con leche culture. Costa Rican coffee is a point of national pride; the lodge brews a local micro-lot.
Good to know
- No visa needed for most nationalities for 90 days.
- US dollars widely accepted; colones better for sodas and taxis.
- Rainy season afternoons (May to November) are short and warm; mornings usually glassy.
- Roads to Nosara are part gravel; the transfer is bumpy and beautiful.
Questions people ask
Can a complete beginner join a surf retreat here?
Yes, and Nosara is one of the best places to start: a sandy-bottomed beach break rather than reef. What matters is the coach-to-student ratio. Ours is capped at four students per coach; anything above six is a queue, not a lesson.
Why is Costa Rica more expensive than Bali or Thailand?
Imported goods, higher wages and a short dry season concentrate demand. A fair price here is genuinely $350 to $550 per day; the same $180 that buys a good day in Thailand buys a compromised one in Nosara.
Is it safe to travel there alone?
Nosara is a small, well-lit surf town where most visitors are repeat guests. The usual rules apply: licensed transfers rather than informal taxis, and don't leave belongings on the sand while you paddle out.
