Solo retreats in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is where we send people whose tank is genuinely empty. Ella sits at 1,000 metres in the tea country, the air is cool, and ayurveda here means a consultation with a doctor rather than a spa menu. It is also outstanding value at roughly $150 to $280 a day, with the world's most beautiful train ride included in getting there.

Practical notes
Getting there
Fly into Colombo (CMB). We book you on the famous blue train for the final hill section (widely called one of the world's most beautiful rides) with a driver handling your bags by road. Around 6 to 7 hours total, and the best six hours of transit you'll do this year.
Worth your free time
- Nine Arches Bridge. Colonial-era viaduct in a jungle bowl; trains at 6:30 and 9:30am.
- Little Adam's Peak. 45 minutes up, panoramic, gentle.
- Ravana Falls. Roadside waterfall ten minutes from town.
- Lipton's Seat. The viewpoint where Sir Thomas surveyed his empire of leaves; go by tuk-tuk at dawn.
Eat this
- Rice and curry. One plate, eight dishes; the lodge's version changes daily with the garden.
- Kottu roti. Chopped flatbread stir-fry you'll hear being made before you see it.
- Estate tea, properly. High-grown Ceylon drunk where it was picked that week.
Good to know
- Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) needed before arrival; takes minutes online.
- Hill country evenings drop to 15°C; pack a fleece.
- Tuk-tuks are the local taxi; agree the fare first or ask for the meter.
- Leeches exist on rainy-season trails; socks tucked in, problem solved.
Questions people ask
What makes ayurveda genuine rather than spa marketing?
A consultation with a qualified ayurvedic doctor first, treatments prescribed from it, and food aligned to what you are given. If a retreat sells fixed treatment packages without ever assessing you, it is a spa with Sanskrit on the menu.
Which monsoon should I plan around?
Sri Lanka has two, hitting opposite coasts at opposite times, which is why the island is a year-round destination if you pick correctly. For the hill country, January to April and July to September are the reliable windows.
Is the hill country cold?
Evenings drop to about 15°C, which surprises people packing for a tropical island. One warm layer is enough.
